FAQ’s

Everything you ever wanted to know about ordering from us.

Are you registered and insured?

YES!  We’re proud of our status.  We’re registered with Kingston Council, and our premises are checked on a regular basis by the Environmental Health Officer.

We also hold Public & Products Liability Insurance, in the event of an unexpected mishap.

This means that you can be sure that your cake has been made in a hygienic environment, by people who understand safe food practices, and who hold your health with utmost importance.

How much will my cake cost?

Cost is based on your design, and how long it takes to create.  A custom cake is personalised, just for you, and most elements (if not all) are hand made.  This can take a lot of time.  But you will get an amazing cake, it’ll be the centrepiece of your table – a cake that you won’t forget, and will look amazing in the photos!

Our minimum charge for a cake is $130.  Cupcakes start at $40 a dozen, or $25 a half dozen.  All flavours have a minimum of one dozen.

We use Lindt couverture chocolate, and quality ingredients.  We work crazy hours to make sure that your cake is awesome, and that you and your guests are thrilled.

We sincerely hope, you’ll be delighted with your cake.

What information do you need to design my cake / provide me with a quote?

The more information you can give us at the start, the better.  At a minimum, we need:

  • Date of your event
  • What are you celebrating?
  • How many guests would you like to serve?
  • Are you having the cake with coffee, or as dessert?
  • Which flavours would you like?
  • Do you have a design in mind? Any pictures, inspiration?
  • Are there any allergies / intolerances we should keep in mind?

How big does my cake need to be?

Well, that depends on how many people you’d like to serve, and whether you’d like to serve it with coffee or dessert.  Our cakes are usually between 4-5″ tall.  A coffee serve is 1”x1”.  A dessert serve is 2”x1”.  In our experience, if serving it with coffee, not everyone at your event will want cake, so often you can cater for just under your final numbers.

Which flavours do you offer?

We are happy to work with your preference!  However, if you have a special request, we’d love to test it first, before we agree to do it.  You’d hate it if your cake fell apart, or was just not up to scratch.  And we’d hate it if you were disappointed.

We’re adding flavours all the time, but currently our cake flavours are:

  • Chocolate
  • Vanilla
  • Lemon
  • Red Velvet
  • Champagne
  • Carrot
  • Madeira
  • White chocolate mud
  • Chocolate mud
  • Gluten-free Vanilla
  • Gluten-free ginger fruit cake

Fillings & icings

  • White / milk / dark chocolate ganache
  • Bakels Pettinice icing
  • Raspberry jam – our own home made
  • Lemon
  • Italian buttercream – this is our favourite, but it does include egg whites
  • American buttercream – fantastic for class parties, and potential allergies

We’ve contacted you, when should we expect a response?

We are often crazy at the end of the week, so please don’t think we’re ignoring you, or that you’re not important to us!  We’re up to our ears in flour, icing and gel colouring!!

Your best bet is to send us an email with all of your cake details, and we’ll try to contact you that night, even if it’s just to confirm our availability for your date.  It also helps if we have some time to think through your concept and how it could work.

Most quotes are done on a Monday night.

If it’s urgent, however, please don’t hesitate to ring us on 0415 901 888, or send an urgent email.

How do I place an order?

Contact us with your information, we’ll work up a design and confirm in writing, you make your payment and off we go!  We try to make the process as easy as possible.

How far in advance of our event do I need to order?

Sooner is better!  It gives us time to think through options, and come up with something spectacular!  Even if you’re not sure of the event details, contact us anyway to check your dates are free, as we do tend to book out, especially during peak times.  Sometimes we can pencil in your spot, and even start thinking through concepts, while you finalise the details.

We’ll try to accommodate you where we can, so try us even if it’s last minute, as we hate to disappoint.

Do you deliver?

Yes, depending on our workload.  It will incur a delivery charge, based on time and distance.

Once the cake is set up at your venue, we will take pictures and notify the venue staff.  Once we have departed the venue, we no longer hold responsibility for the cake.

How do I transport my cake?

Please make sure you’ve thought about this before you arrive at our premise.

The BEST place for your cake to be is in the boot, with nothing rolling around it.  It’s got a lower centre of gravity than the seat, is far more stable, and you’ll be driving like Grandma anyway.  This location will ensure you’re watching the traffic, and not the cake as you swing around those hairpin bends (they’ll feel like it!!).

If you can’t transport it in the boot, put it on of the floor of your car.  Try to keep your eyes on the road, and drive conservatively.  You really are NOT at Bathurst when you take off at the lights.  Well, not in this instance, anyway.

Please note that once you leave the Dishy Delights kitchen with your cake, we are no longer responsible for it.  If you have a mishap between our kitchen and the celebration, pending circumstances, and as time allows, we may be able to try to rectify it for you, however there will be a fee incurred.

GREAT!  I’m ready to order.  When do you need payment?

We will require a cleared payment before your cake leaves our kitchen.  We will forward our account details to you when finalising your order.

Please be respectful, and avoid embarrassment for both parties by ensuring that your payment has cleared a few days before you are due to collect your order.  If you haven’t managed to do this, you will need to bring cash with you on collection.

Under no circumstances will a cake leave our premise if it has not been paid for.

Due to the complexity of ensuring that your day is PERFECT, wedding cakes have their own set of payment terms.  These will be issued to you during the planning stages of your day.

Oh, NO!  We have to cancel our party!!

We’re very sorry to hear that, and we hope everything is ok!  It’ll work better for you if you’ve managed to catch us with a bit of notice, so fingers crossed!

We have already invested time designing your perfect cake, and buying supplies, however most cancellations are beyond your control, so we’ve tried to be very reasonable.  Here’s how we’ll refund you (note that wedding cakes have their own cancellation policy):

  • Outside of 5 days of the event, all monies with the exception of a $20 administration fee, will be refunded to you
  • 5 days of the event, all monies with the exception of a $50 charge will be refunded to you
  • 24 hours of the event, 50% of the charge will be refunded to you
  • No refund will be provided if Dishy Delights is notified within 24 hours of the event

How do I store my cake?

You’ll leave our kitchen with storage instructions.  But basically, it goes like this:

Before your event

  • Keep in a cool place, out of direct sunlight – especially given the hot days we can have
  • Do not keep your cake in fridge.  A cool place, out of direct sunlight should be sufficient
  • If it is exceedingly hot, you may decide that the fridge is the best place for it.  In this cake, before serving, please allow it to come to room temperature, allowing all of the condensation to evaporate before touching the icing.  You may wish to place it in front of a fan, or air conditioner to aid evaporation.

Once the cake is cut

  • If there are any leftovers, place cling wrap on the face of the crumb to prevent drying out
  • Due to the composition of ganache, if you wish to keep the cake for an extended period (2+ days), you may wish to store it, well wrapped, in the fridge or freezer.  This will keep the cake reasonably fresh.
  • If you wish to keep it any longer than 2 days, please freeze for best results.

What if there are leftovers?

You’ve got 3 choices.  You can take it home, and eat it tomorrow.  Or, you can freeze it, and serve it later, as you need it (it’s great in lunches!!).  Or finally, you can take it to work tomorrow, and be the most popular person in the office (don’t forget to take our business cards, if you pick this option)!

What if I have feedback?

We love feedback!  Even if it’s not great.

Really, please let us know if you’ve not found any part of our process amazing.  Your constructive criticism is an important part of making us an awesome business.  You’ll be doing us a favour, and we’ll be grateful for the chance to improve our systems.

Remember that we’re often running flat out, and may not realise that you’ve found something unsatisfactory.  Please help us out and  let us know.

Equally, if you have FANTASTIC feedback, please sing it from the top of the highest building.  Get on Facebook, please  tell your friends and family.  Word of mouth is the most valuable of marketing tools for us – we like to use it for good, and not evil.

Do you offer a refund if we’re unhappy?

That depends.  We REALLY want you to be happy.  So, if you’ve found something unsatisfactory, please return the whole cake, and we’ll work something out for you, depending on the circumstances.

However, if you go ahead and serve the cake, that tells us that it was worthy of serving, and it has completed it’s purpose.  In this instance, a refund will rarely be offered.

But really, we hope that you’ll be thrilled with our product.  We’ve taken a lot of time and tested all of our recipes (more than a famous Australian women’s magazine test kitchen!), and we expect that our products will exceed your expectation!

We’re reasonable people, please let us know if you do have a problem.

What’s this I hear about a Referrals Program?

That’s right!!  If you refer a friend to us, and they mention that you told them we were amazing when they make their booking, we’ll give YOU 10% off your next order (up to the value of $50).  We’re awesome, especially when YOU’RE awesome!

So!  Is there possibly anything else that you need to know?  Give us a shout!  We’ll be thrilled to talk to you!

THE END.  :-)
